If you searched for a gym in Carlsbad with a sauna and a cold plunge, you've probably seen the same gap most North County lifters notice. Wellness studios offer the recovery amenities but no real training floor. Big-box gyms offer the training floor but skip recovery (or charge a premium tier upcharge for it). Carlsbad has no shortage of either type — what it doesn't have is a facility that combines them at the standard a serious lifter expects.
That's specifically why TSE was built. Here's what's actually included.
The recovery amenities
Temperature-controlled cold immersion tub. Used pre-lift, on rest days, or 6+ hours post-lift to avoid blunting hypertrophy adaptations. Included with every tier.
Traditional dry sauna at 80–90°C. Used post-lift or on rest days for cardiovascular and longevity-research-aligned exposure. Included with every tier.
Whole-body cold exposure chamber for shorter, more intense sessions. Faster cycle time than a cold plunge for members on tight schedules. Included with every tier.
Dedicated rooms with licensed massage therapists. Hands-on bodywork is a per-session add-on. Massage is the only spa amenity not included in base membership.
The contrast therapy protocol that actually works
The most-asked question on this page is "should I do hot then cold, or cold then hot?" The research-backed protocol for general recovery: 5–15 minutes sauna → 1–3 minutes cold → repeat 2–3 cycles, end on cold for alertness or hot for relaxation. Avoid cold immediately after a hypertrophy-focused lifting session — it blunts the adaptation. Full protocol breakdown →
The training floor — not optional, not an afterthought
Gyms with sauna and cold plunge often skimp on the training floor. TSE doesn't. Olympic platforms, power racks, plate-loaded specialty machines (hack squat, pendulum squat, belt squat, reverse hyper, leg curl, leg extension, chest press, lat pulldown, cable stations), full free-weight area with dumbbells to 150+ lb, dedicated stretch and warm-up zone, and a posing room.
The training floor is what makes TSE a serious gym with recovery, not a recovery studio with weights.
What's included with membership
Every TSE membership tier includes:
- Full training floor access
- Cold plunge, Finnish sauna, Frost Locker
- Personalized program written from an initial assessment, updated every 6–12 weeks
- On-floor coaching access from certified coaches during peak hours
- Posing room
- Posing room
- Retail and café area
Massage therapy is the only spa amenity that's a per-session add-on. Dedicated 1-on-1 personal training sessions are also per session for members who want hands-on supervision.

What this looks like vs other Carlsbad options
Most "spa gyms" in Carlsbad and North County fall into one of three categories. Boutique wellness studios (cold plunge + sauna only, no real training floor): great for recovery, useless for serious lifting. Commercial chains with optional spa add-on: training floor is good but recovery is gated behind a premium tier or per-visit fee. Luxury hospitality gyms: aesthetic and amenities, but training floor optimized for boutique cardio rather than serious resistance training.
TSE's category is "serious training facility + full spa, both included, both at premium standard." That category was empty in Carlsbad. We're filling it.
